EXARC: EuroREA - Journal

European EXchange on Archaeological Research and Communication

EXARC is the European organisation of Archaeological Open Air Museums and other facilities involved in Experimental Archaeology. It is our aim to establish a high standard of both scientific research and public presentation. The idea of international exchange of knowledge, human resources, publications and facsimiles is to improve the quality of work for all associated members. It is not our intention to exclude anyone who does not meet our high standards concerning the quality of museums work. We rather want to encourage and incorporate other institutions conducting Experimental Archaeology and help them to a higher level.

Information for Contributors

The issue 5/2008:

The deadline for contributions is the 1st of February 2008.
The volume should be published in early Autumn 2008.

The journal EuroREA (Reconstruction and Experiment Archaeology) aims to be a discussion platform for the exchange of experience and information for all aspects of archaeological experiment, construction and the use of models in education.

The journal is divided into six sections:

studies

contains reports on finished experimental projects. The contributions can be up to 5000 words long. Longer works can be placed on the internet with a summarised version being published in the journal.

items

contains interim reports with a length of up to 1500 words. Reports on specific parts of projects, accompanied by comparative studies and contributions on methodology, can be up to 4500 words long.

discussion

is dedicated to the practical problems concerning experiments and education. While in general the contributions should be kept below 1500 words, those supported by examples might be up to 3000 words long.

education

introduces educational activities which use experimental constructions, ancient technologies and archaeological models including virtual ones. The contributions can be up to 1500 words.

reports

contains reports on conferences, open days and various other activities of up to 1000 words. In this section we would also like to introduce organisations which take part in experimental events. These contributions can be up to 2000 words long.

reviews

presents reviews on books, TV programmes and educational packages. The contributions should be kept below 2000 words.

References should be placed in the text using the Harvard referencing system (e.g. Tichý 2001: 25-27). A full bibliography should be provided at the end of the contribution. We know that the methods of presenting bibliography vary slightly in different regions but please be consistent.

Contributions are accepted in English, French or German. In their final form the articles will be accompanied with two or three sentence English inscriptions and summaries in the other two languages. While these will normally be provided by the editors we would appreciate it if the texts are accompanied by summaries of up to 10 % of the length of the article.

The contributions should be sent in an electronic form via e-mail to . In the case of a slow internet connection, it is possible with agreement to submit the accompanying illustrations on a CD-ROM.

The text should be submitted in Word for Windows, preferably RTF format, using Times New Roman font, size 12, 1.5 spacing, double spacing between paragraphs, no indentation.

Accompanying illustrations (charts, tables, graphs, photographs, linear drawings) should be submitted independently from the text, clearly numbered and with captions. Charts, tables and graphs should be in Excel.

Photographs should be in TIFF or JPEG with a resolution of 300 dpi for a 15 cm wide picture, linear drawings also in TIFF or JPEG with a resolution of at least 600 dpi for a 15 cm wide picture. The number of illustrations is not restricted as long as they are relevant.

As the contact between the authors and the editors is via e-mail, we would like to ask them to keep us updated on their e-mail addresses for the purpose of sending proofs.
